First Day Cover - Australia Day 1986
Australia Day 1986 - First Day of Issue - 24th Jan 1986 - Melbourne Vic 3000
Stamp - 33c - An Aboriginal Perspective
Back
Drawing upon the art styles of the designer's Aboriginal heritage, the Australia Day 1986 stamp depicts our ancient land being cradled and protected by a creation Ancestor called a Wandjina. In the Wandjina's hand, an egg symbolises perfection and rebirth, an ideal to which all Australians can aspire. A Rainbow Serpent, also a Creation Ancestor, runs through the Wandjina's body, it's tongue forming the Wandjina's eyes. The cover photograph shows the Walls of China in southwestern New South Wales, a region settled by the Aboriginal people more than 30,000 years ago.
