First Day Cover - Australia Day 1983
Australia Day 1983 - First Day of Issue - 26th Jan 1983 - Queenscliff VIC 3225
Back
In January 1788, eleven ships of the "First Fleet" anchored off Sydney Cove. Aboard were some 1500 people who were destined to establish the first permanent European settlement in Australia. Flagship of the fleet was HMS Sirus, named after on of the brightest stars in the southern sky. The swiftest ship in the fleet was the escort vessel HM Brig Supply, and it was to this ship that the Commander of the fleet, Captain Arthur Phillip, had transferred for the last long leg of the voyage. Hms Sirus and HM Brig Supply appear on stamps commemorating Australia Day 1983.
