Governor Arthur Phillip raised the British flag over the first European settlement in Australia on 26 January 1788. Since that time 26 January has variously been known as Landing Day, Foundation Day, Anniversary Day and ANA Day. The date is now nationally celebrated as Australia Day. The Australia Day 1981 stamp features the Australian flag portrayed as the island-continent's surface.

First Day Cover - Australia Day 1982

Australia Day 1982 - First Day of Issue - 20th Jan 1982 - Eaglehawk VIC 3556
24c Stamp - The Immigrants

The stamp, commemorating Australia Day 1982, honours the three great waves of migration to Australia. The Aboriginals were the first people to come to Australia, at least 30,000 years ago. The arrival of Governor Arthur Phillip to found a penal colony in 1788 heralded the second wave of migration. The third, and most recent wave occurred following World War II when migrants from more than 100 countries sought new lives in Australia.

First Day Cover - Australia Day 1983

Australia Day 1983 - First Day of Issue - 26th Jan 1983 - Queenscliff VIC 3225

Back

In January 1788, eleven ships of the "First Fleet" anchored off Sydney Cove. Aboard were some 1500 people who were destined to establish the first permanent European settlement in Australia. Flagship of the fleet was HMS Sirus, named after on of the brightest stars in the southern sky. The swiftest ship in the fleet was the escort vessel HM Brig Supply, and it was to this ship that the Commander of the fleet, Captain Arthur Phillip, had transferred for the last long leg of the voyage. Hms Sirus and HM Brig Supply appear on stamps commemorating Australia Day 1983.

Stamp-30c Cook's Cottage

Back

Cook's Cottage stands in the Fitzroy Gardens, Melbourne, as a tribute to Captain James Cook, whose exploration of Australia's east coast was directly responsible for the colonisation of the continent. The original cottage was built in 1755 by Cook's father, at Great Ayton, Yorkshire. Tradition says that the great navigator visited his parents there, between voyages. The cottage was purchased and shipped to Melbourne in 1934, as part of Victoria's centenary celebrations.

First Day Cover - Australia Day 1986

Australia Day 1986 - First Day of Issue - 24th Jan 1986 - Melbourne Vic 3000
Stamp - 33c - An Aboriginal Perspective

Back

Drawing upon the art styles of the designer's Aboriginal heritage, the Australia Day 1986 stamp depicts our ancient land being cradled and protected by a creation Ancestor called a Wandjina. In the Wandjina's hand, an egg symbolises perfection and rebirth, an ideal to which all Australians can aspire. A Rainbow Serpent, also a Creation Ancestor, runs through the Wandjina's body, it's tongue forming the Wandjina's eyes. The cover photograph shows the Walls of China in southwestern New South Wales, a region settled by the Aboriginal people more than 30,000 years ago.
